| Industrial clusters comprise a complex web of economic, political, and social relationships. In this paper we focus on the social relationships that underpin industrial clusters. Within the context of the Maumee Valley Growers (MVG) greenhouse cluster that has been operating in northwest Ohio since 2003, we identify four variables that can be used to establish operational benchmarks for evaluating cluster performance. These benchmarks focus on the often ignored social relationships that underpin a successful industrial cluster. These benchmarks measure (1) collaboration between cluster members, (2) the extent of the local and non-local ties of cluster members, (3) the connectivity of the core industry members to the rest of the cluster, and (4) the position of the cluster management within the network. We use Social Network Analysis (SNA) to measure the benchmarks. |
