UPDATE:  Sunbelt 2020 - Paris

Dear INSNA Members and Sunbelt registrants,

We hope that everyone is safe, healthy, and doing well during this difficult time. I wanted to update you on INSNA activities related to the Paris Sunbelt. Given that businesses in France will be closed through mid-July, we are now in a position to officially cancel the Paris Sunbelt.

A few weeks ago, we sent out a survey to obtain feedback on how best to move forward with a Sunbelt 2020, given the circumstances. I want to thank everyone for their responses – we heard from 420 people! I think this response demonstrates how important our annual meeting is to the INSNA community. Our Advisory Committee has met to discuss your feedback. The Committee and the Board discussed the option of postponing the in-person conference, but decided that, unfortunately, this option is not feasible given the unpredictability of the pandemic over the coming year or more, and the contractual obligations that are required to set up a large conference. Two-thirds of you indicated an interest in a virtual meeting this year.  A proposal for a virtual Sunbelt that was developed by the Advisory Committee, with input from the Paris Sunbelt Organizing Committee, has been forwarded to the Board for discussion. Please keep a look out for details by mid-May!

I would like to acknowledge the enormous efforts of Paola Tubaro, Emmanuel Lazega, and their Sunbelt organizing team. They put together a phenomenal program for the Paris meeting and I know that it is incredibly disappointing that we will not see their efforts come to fruition. On behalf of INSNA, I want to say Thank You to the Paris Organizing Committee for all of the hard work that they have put into planning the Paris Sunbelt. Our hope is that we will be able to integrate some of these plans into the virtual activities that unfold over the summer.

While I know that a virtual meeting is not the same as seeing each of you in-person, I think that some connection, even virtually, is important for our community this year. Personally, I would benefit from connecting with each of you in some way over this summer. So, I look forward to hearing about how you are doing and where your science is going at an INSNA virtual venue in the coming months.

Warmest Regards,
Laura Koehly, INSNA President
